The More
Excellent Way:
From Love to Honor

Honor is a practical expression of Kingdom love. To honor is to recognize and treat people according to the value God has given them, even when that value has not been earned by their behavior.

The More
Excellent Way

— 1 Corinthians 13

This class is called The More Excellent Way because that is precisely the expression Paul uses at the end of 1 Corinthians 12.

Paul is talking about different functions, a body in which every member needs the others; and then he ends the chapter by saying: “And yet I will show you the most excellent way.” And we know what comes next—first Corinthians 13, the chapter about love.

Before We Begin

  • Why is it sometimes easier to honor strangers than the people we live with?
  • Does familiarity give us permission to treat people with less honor?
  • Can we say we honor our family while our words regularly hurt or diminish them?
  • What does honoring someone look like when we strongly disagree with them?
  • If our family experienced only our behavior at home, what would they learn about honor from us?
