For a man to truly live by God’s purpose, he must understand the profound responsibility that comes with the calling to have dominion. In Scripture, dominion is not about ruling with force or aggression, but about stewardship—managing and overseeing the world, relationships, and life with God-given authority. The very first command given to mankind in Genesis 1:28—“Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air”—shows us that dominion is a mandate for responsible leadership.
Living by God’s purpose means leading with wisdom, integrity, and humility, following the example set by Jesus, who came not to dominate, but to serve. Dominion, as God intended, is about taking responsibility and managing creation in a way that honors God’s principles. It involves leading in the home, at work, and in the community, while ensuring that everything is aligned with God’s will. A man living according to this divine purpose is a servant leader, using his influence to build, protect, and empower those entrusted to him.
On the other hand, dominance is rooted in ego and insecurity. It is the desire to control others for personal gain, often stemming from a fear of weakness or inferiority. Unlike dominion, which is rooted in service and responsibility, dominance seeks to impose power without care for others’ needs or growth. This mindset can lead to toxic environments, broken relationships, and unmet potential.
Living by God’s purpose is a higher way to live. It calls men to lead with humility, courage, and love—understanding that true greatness lies not in domination, but in empowering others and fulfilling their God-given roles. Men who live with dominion reflect God’s image as wise and loving rulers, managing their world with purpose, honor, and integrity.
A Challenge for this Week
Take time this week to reflect on how you can live out God’s purpose more intentionally. Consider the responsibilities you have and how your actions impact others. This week, make a commitment to lead with purpose in one area of your life.
Day 1: Reflect on Your Identity as a Man of Dominion
Activity: Read Genesis 1:26-28. Spend 5 minutes reflecting on what it means to have dominion as God intended. Write down what stewardship looks like in your life today. Do you see areas in your life where you are leading responsibly or areas where you may be abdicating that responsibility?
Thought to Ponder: Dominion is about stewardship—taking responsibility and managing what God has entrusted to us. How can you apply this to your role as a leader, husband, or father?
Day 2: Distinguish Between Dominion and Dominance
Activity: Think about the difference between dominion (leading with wisdom and care vs leading through control or power). Reflect on your actions in the past week. Have you led with care and responsibility, or have there been moments where you exercised dominance in relationships, work, or your community?
Reflection Question: Are you more likely to act out of dominion (responsible leadership) or dominance (power-driven behavior)? What are the consequences and results of each approach in your life?
Day 3: Exploring Leadership in Your Life
Activity: Reflect on your role as a leader at work, in your family, and in your community. Take a moment to write down how you can start leading by serving this week. Consider a small act of service you can perform to reflect God’s dominion.
Challenge: This week, practice leading from a place of humility—whether at work, home, or in your relationships. Take on a task you usually delegate and approach it with the mindset of service.
Day 4: The Ego Behind Dominance
Activity: Reflect on the times when you’ve felt the urge to dominate others. What triggered that feeling? Was it ego, fear, or insecurity? Write down specific examples when you might have chosen dominance over dominion. How did it impact your relationship with others?
Thought to Ponder: Dominance is rooted in ego and insecurity, while dominion comes from responsibility and humility. How can you recognize when you’re acting out of ego instead of responsibility?
Day 5: Living with Integrity in Leadership
Activity: Write down how integrity is an essential part of dominion. How do you lead with integrity in your relationships, work, and community? Are there areas where you’ve compromised your values to gain an advantage?
Reflection Question: What does it mean to lead with honor, humility, and integrity in every area of life?
Day 6: Embrace Servant Leadership
Activity: Today, practice servant leadership by taking on a leadership role in a situation and choosing to serve others instead of commanding or controlling. Choose providing those under your lead, anything they may need to fulfill their tasks and mission, and reflect on how that shift in mindset influences your relationships.
Thought to Ponder: Leading by serving is the essence of dominion. What would it look like if you led your home, your work, or your community with the mindset of serving others first?
Day 7: Weekend Reflection
Activity: Spend some time in prayer, asking God to help you walk in dominion and not in dominance. Reflect on the progress you’ve made in recognizing the difference between these two leadership styles.
Prayer: “Lord, thank You for the opportunity to reflect on my leadership. Help me to lead with integrity and humility, taking responsibility for my actions and serving others as You have called me to do. Amen.”
